Bounce Back Stronger: 3 Ways to Overcome Disappointment

It’s been a minute since we have chatted here.  My last post was about a year ago and I miss writing.  It is so cathartic for me and it’s a great way to share my life and my experiences in hopes that it might help someone along the way.

I recently went through a major disappointment that knocked the wind out of me.  It hurt me so bad that I kind of went into hiding for a month or two.  I was so depressed and sad that I didn’t know how I was going to come out of it.   Thankfully I did and now I am able to share some practical steps that I believe can help anyone overcome any disappointment life might throw at us.

We’ve all been there, right? That gut-wrenching feeling when something doesn’t go as planned. Whether it’s a missed opportunity, a setback in your career, (for me it was being let go from a job after two weeks)  or even a personal goal that seems out of reach.   Disappointment can come swift, like a tide pulling you out to sea. But guess what my friend, you are so much stronger than you think. You’re not alone, and you can definitely bounce back better than ever. 

Today I am sharing three ways to overcome disappointment and get back to your fabulous self!

 

Spend time with Jesus

First things first, let’s talk about the ultimate source of comfort and strength: spending time with Jesus. 

When life gets tough, there’s no better way to find peace than to connect with Him. Taking some quiet moments for prayer, reading some of my favorite scriptures, or simply sitting in silence to hear His voice and feel His presence. Trust me, inviting Jesus into your struggles can transform your perspective and give you the strength to move forward. 

Reflecting on His love and promises reminds us that we’re never alone and that there’s a greater plan at work.

Remember, His strength is made perfect in our weakness.

Here are a few of my go-to scriptures for when I am facing seasons of uncertainty and disappointment:

  • Jeremiah 29:11
  • Romans 8:28
  • 2 Corinthians 12:9

 

Allow Yourself to Feel the Emotions

Okay, girl, let’s be real—disappointment hurts and It’s okay to not be okay. 

Feeling sad, frustrated, or even angry is normal.  Pushing those emotions away or pretending they don’t exist won’t help in the long run. Give yourself permission to feel everything that comes with disappointment.

Take some time to sit with your feelings. Cry if you need to. Journal your thoughts and emotions. Sometimes, letting it all out is the first step toward healing. Remember, emotions are a natural part of the human experience, and acknowledging them is crucial for moving forward.

One thing that I have noticed in my own personal experiences: when you go heard first/heart first into the pain of what you are going through, it lessens the length of time it takes to heal and move on from it.

I am by no means saying it is going to be easy, but it will make the healing process happen much sooner than if you ignored the feelings completely..

Embracing your emotions is a crucial step in the healing process. Plus, once you’ve let it all out, you’ll feel a sense of relief and clarity. Remember, feeling your feelings doesn’t make you weak; it makes you human.

 

Embrace Self-Care and Treat Yourself

Last but definitely not least, don’t forget to pamper yourself a little. 

When you’re feeling down, a bit of self-care can work wonders. Run a bubble bath, put on your favorite face mask, or indulge in a little retail therapy (and who doesn’t love a new outfit?)

Taking care of yourself isn’t just about physical pampering—it’s about doing things that nourish your soul. Maybe it’s picking up a new hobby, going for a walk in nature, or catching up with a friend over coffee. Do what makes your heart sing and reminds you of your worth.

Surround Yourself with a Loving Support System

You know that saying, “No man (or woman) is an island”? It’s true! Lean on your friends and family during tough times. Surround yourself with people who love you, uplift you, and remind you of your worth.

Call your bestie for a heart-to-heart, have a family movie night, or just hang out with people who make you laugh. There’s nothing like a strong support system to help you see the light at the end of the tunnel. Plus, it’s always more fun to navigate life’s ups and downs together.

 

Bouncing back from disappointment isn’t always easy, but it is absolutely possible. By spending time with Jesus, a little bit of self-care, allowing yourself to feel and process your emotions, and leaning on your support system, you can overcome any setback and emerge even stronger.

Remember, sis, you are resilient, you are loved, and you are capable of amazing things. Disappointment is just a detour, not a dead end. Keep your head up, your heart open, and your spirit strong.
