Hey guys. So I am all about style and being intentional with the way I dress. I am always perfecting this area, whether it is watching youtube videos reading magazines, or getting outfit ideas on Pinterest.
Style is innate for some people, but I do believe that you can learn to dress and develop style just like you can learn how to do anything else. Having a set of style “rules” or tips that you sort of live by is a great way to be more intentional about how you dress. I have a set of rules that I live by and I may tweak them every so often, but they don’t really change.
My top 7 style tips that I live by every day.
Watch Trends For At Least Six Months
I don’t follow trends. It’s really as simple as that. If you ask any well-dressed or stylish person they would probably say this. It’s one thing to incorporate a trend into your wardrobe, once you have tested and tried it to make sure it works for you. But following trends is a surefire way to make sure you never have anything to wear.
My rule when it comes to trends is, to watch the trend for at least six months. At least! Trends are more fickle than a 2-year-olds appetite. IYKYK. Never ever jump on a trend when it first appears. It’s best to wait to see if the trend has staying power. If it is something that will last into the next fashion season or even stick around permanently.
After several months if you see that the trend is staying strong then I would say is a great time to try it out.
Invest In Quality Pieces
Quality over quantity has really become one of my new mottos. Especially when it comes to my clothes.
I have gotten to a place where I want pieces that will really last and won’t fall apart after only three wears. Investing in items like nice coats, leather boots, nice handbags, and jewelry.
They can take an outfit to the next level and make you look polished and super chic.
This area may take some time to build your collection and get the pieces you want, but trust me it’s worth it.
Repurpose Your Clothes
I am not sure where the idea came from that you only wear something once, but we are definitely not doing that in 2023. Girl, I can’t stress this enough, but WEAR YOUR CLOTHES! Wear them as many times as you like and find different ways to style your pieces.
You can wear a blazer a hundred times in a million different ways. This will save you a lot of money in the long run.
Fit and Comfort
When it comes to style it’s really the little details that matter in the end. Making sure your clothes fit properly is one of the most important tips on this list.
If you are like me I am considered midsize, which means I fall somewhere in a size 10-12. This means that I sometimes have to buy things that are a little big and get them taken in. That is if I want things to fit me properly.
If you can’t fit things as they are right off the rack then I would say find a seamstress to take in those pieces. This will guarantee that your clothes fit right every time.
Comfort is important because you are wearing an outfit all day. We typically are getting dressed early in the morning and do not get home until much later that day. Nobody wants to be pulling at a shirt or having to fix a pair of pants that ride up. Make sure those clothes are comfortable before you leave the store with them, and if they aren’t take them back.
Create A Uniform
I love this tip because it is helpful if you don’t have a lot of time in the mornings to devote to styling pieces in your wardrobe.
Having go-to looks that you wear for certain scenarios I think is genius. One of my go-to looks is cute jogger sets. I call it my mom uniform. It’s just easy and comfortable for me to throw on to pick up the kids.
You can have go-to outfits for whatever you want and have the peace that comes with knowing exactly what to wear every day.
Accessorize
Handbags, hats, scarves, jewelry, and sunglasses. Adding any of these items to your outfit is going to give it that extra something. Accessories with an outfit are like the cherry on top of an ice cream sundae. The whole thing is really pointless without it.
You Should Always Feel Amazing
I say this all of the time, at the end of the day your clothes should make you feel confident and beautiful. Once you’ve finished doing all of these things, how do you feel? You are the one that has to rock that look. If you can’t own it then you shouldn’t wear it. The way you dress is an extension of how you feel on the inside. So only wear what makes you feel like a movie star.
